Join the Boy Scouts of American in helping the less fortunate by donating nonperishable food items. Place food items to be donated in bag by your front door on Saturday. Walmart donates to food bank

Managers from the Las Cruces Walmart stores, left, and the advisory council and staff members for Roadrunner Food Bank are all smiles Friday after the food bank received a $90,000 truck from the Walmart Foundation. Roadrunner Food Bank is nonprofit and works to feed the needy in southern New Mexico. The truck will allow the food bank to pick up an additional 700,000-pounds of food annually, according to Nancy Barnes-Smith, manager of community relations.

Progress Club receives certificate

Three members of the GFWC Progress Club journeyed to Santa Fe, on Jan. 27, to attend a meeting the New Mexico State Legislature and accept a commendation from the House of Representatives sponsored by Representative Terry H. McMillan for the club's contributions to the city of Las Cruces, especially for its origination of the 10-year "5,000 Flowers" 9-11 commemorative art project. Since its inception in 2001, each year participating artists in the area have contributed their artwork to this commemorative event.

The State Bar of New Mexico is accepting entries from high school juniors and seniors from around the state for its annual essay contest. This year's assignment is entitled "The Search, which deals with personal freedoms in the school environment." Essays will be accepted until March 1.
